What is Pilates?

Joe Pilates
Used for generations, Pilates is a highly effective exercise system named after its originator, Joseph Pilates. Developed in the early 1900's to improve his health and to support the health of his fellow World War I internees, Pilates later incorporated the resistance of springs into rehabilitation programs for hospitalized patients. Later these springs were incorporated into machines and developed into the unique equipment now used in current day Pilates.

Initially, professional dancers were the primary users of the Pilates exercise program because it offered improved strength, balance and flexibility. More recently it has become a popular form of exercise for anyone interested in its health benefits. The exercise system is usually taught in one of two formats; the unique Pilates equipment and group mat classes not using equipment. Lately, Pilates has merged with other movement techniques, such as yoga, or the use of an exercise ball. This promotes creative integration of the Pilates principles into a greater range of exercises in the mat class setting.

Benefits of Pilates

Pilates Class Designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body, Pilates' systematic practice of specific exercises are coupled with focused breathing patterns and yields numerous benefits if practiced regularly. Posture, balance, and core strength are all improved. A primary focus in Pilates is increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing. Strength, flexibility, and coordination; both muscular and mental, are also key components in an effective Pilates program. Many Pilates students experience positive body awareness for the first time.

Is Pilates for You?

Today, over five million Americans practice Pilates, and the numbers continue to grow. Pilates is recognized as a positive form of movement-based exercise that can be tailored to any level of not just fitness, but also of health. Some of the movements in the Pilates system are very difficult and challenging. If you are unable to perform the exercise, it is best to stop and tell the instructor. The exercise may be too difficult, or you may need additional help to do it correctly. Remember, it is always advisable to first see your doctor before starting any exercise program.
